Twitter vs Facebook: Differing audiences and convergence

Over the past two or three months, it seems that everyone I know from high school and college have discovered Facebook. I’m getting multiple friend requests per day. Actually, when I think about Facebook, it seems to work reverse-chronologically in terms of adoption. I first joined Facebook when they opened up to everyone and my [...]

And yet it still sucks…

Mashable has a post called Fring Delivers the Most Impressive VoIP and IM Client for iPhone so Far. That “so far” is very important here. Fring is another “sign up for our account and sign up for your other IM and Skype accounts through us” services, so it’s not a pure Skype client. Also, it [...]

Either the new StumbleUpon web-bar is busted, or everyone is misreporting a simple advertisement as the new hot feature…

So, I saw this post this morning, noting that StumbleUpon is doing this new thing where you don’t need the toolbar. Except, I cannot find any evidence of this anywhere on StumbleUpon’s actual site, which still prominently says “Get the StumbleUpon Toolbar” and still says “Join and Download Now” when you are signing up for [...]

Twitter Staging

I just tried to go to Twitter to update everyone on how much my parrot Sonja was freaking out just now, when I encountered this error:
Then when I click cancel, I get this error:

TimesPeople: The New York Times launches a social network and Facebook app

Interesting new things coming out of the New York Times today. TimesPeople is a social network for people reading the New York Times online, whereby they can recommend stories. It reminds me of a mashup between a sort of site-specific Google Reader’s Shared Items feature—since essentially all you can do now is recommend NYTimes stories [...]

FrrriendFeed Talk Like a Pirate Day Fun

In case you missed the news, both Twitter and FriendFeed rolled out new page designs yesterday (how’s that for synchronicity?). In any case, today, FriendFeed already changed their new design slightly for Talk Like A Pirate Day:

Avast! Ye can follow me down the plank here on Twitter and here on FriendFeed.
Also, if you like gadgets [...]

Google Chrome: Yet Another Browser

Looks like Google Chrome, Google’s new browser, will be released tomorrow:
So check in again tomorrow to try Google Chrome for yourself. We’ll post an update here as soon as it’s ready.
I first spotted it via Techmeme’s tweet of the Kara Swisher’s article about Google Chrome. More info available here and the comic version is [...]

I’m testing ScribeFire

I had been avoiding giving ScribeFire a chance, until I discovered that Chris Finke was the guy behind it. He’s a superstar, so I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a good experience. It’s already better than WordPress’s default “Blog this” bookmarklet, which has gone 100% WYSIWYG (and thus 100% useless for me).
More here: Getting [...]

Mac vs PC: Does it matter anymore? - O’Reilly Broadcast

I blogged over on my O’Reilly Author blog for the first time since 2005 today, wondering aloud if Mac vs. PC matters any more. Here’s the beginning bit:
Anyone who’s read what I’ve written in the past knows that I’ve always been a die hard Mac user. I’ve noticed a change recently, however, in my own [...]

New York, Mahalo, and the future…

Well over a year ago, I found myself leaving Netscape (now become Propeller) to look for new opportunities. Today, I find myself in a similar situation.
After a lot of thought and tough conversation, Kristin and I have decided to head back to New York. This certainly wasn’t the way we wanted things to play out [...]

Add FriendFeed to Your Mahalo Profile

You can now add FriendFeed to Your Mahalo Profile. What’s FriendFeed (*), you ask? It’s the place to have meaningful online conversations.
Begin side rant: The place to have meaningful online conversations used to be Twitter (*), but since Twitter is never up anymore and doesn’t have threaded comments, the discussion is starting to die [...]

Is Google Reader giving anyone else problems?

Ever since yesterday afternoon, whenever I check my feeds, several sites that I subscribe to are showing a lot of items that I’ve already read as being unread. It seems to vary from about 3 per blog to every post that blog has ever done. What’s worse, it keeps reoccurring. I mark all as read [...]

Wow. Check this out. I first spotted this here and here (although for some reason those posts don’t show up on Eliot’s main page, just in his feed).
In any case, I just want to reiterate my thoughts on this. The title of this post is the code key needed to unlock HD-DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs [...]

Reading feeds again…

One of the problems for me when I was working at Netscape was information overload. Netscape was all about breaking news and staying on top of the breaking news, and since I was the editorial director there for so long, I woke up each morning, checked the news, checked to see if top stories were [...]
