Samplings from the World Wide Web by C.K. Sample III

Entries for the ‘Netscape’ Category

Dear spamtastic hordes of bad netizens:

I’m no longer actively working on running the day to day on Netscape. Do not email me asking for me to look into why you were banned from the site. You know damn well why you were banned. Go find some other part of the internet to plague with your crappy ad-laden blogspot sites filled [...]

I’m no longer Lead Anchor on Netscape

*sigh* There is no longer a lead anchor badge on my Netscape member page.
I passed the test. I will diminish, and go into the West and remain C.K.*
*Note: extra special brownie points to whoever gets this reference.

I’m in the last hour of my last shift on Netscape…

…as my gift to you, oh Internets, I’ve been spending much of today banning sock puppet members who would abuse the system, spammers, and spam sites.
Note: I will still be consulting with AOL / Netscape through March.

Latest Netscape fiasco

I just wrote this in response to one of several nasty messages I’ve received on Netscape about our decision to ban a member who was violating our Terms of Use and whose friends used the site against itself, posting a petition to bring her back that was bathed in unwarranted accusations that bordered on libelous [...]

Every good democracy has rules…

…and Netscape, while being democratic in that it is a social news site, is a web site. It’s not a form of government, so I don’t think it qualifies as a democracy. Certain members on the site have been openly cantankerous and abusive and have ignored our requests to follow the proper methods of lodging [...]

Resurrecting the Sample The Web Podcast

I received an iTalk for my iPod from Maggie for Christmas (thanks, Mags!), so recording audio just became a lot more convenient. As that’s the case, and as I’ve found myself recently with more to say than I used to have to say, I’ve decided to resurrect the Sample The Web podcast. I just recorded [...]

Netscape FTW!

Check this out:

Category: Peer Production News
Best Offering: Netscape.com

Description: In a decision that likely won’t be agreed with by the users of last year’s winner in this category, Netscape has been selected as the best all around peer production news site. Though Digg is more popular in terms of traffic than the next three most [...]

Censorship vs. Choosing to Air: Video of Saddam’s Execution

Last night, one of our members uploaded footage of Saddam Hussein’s execution. The story was reported by another member as needing a warning attached to it. I then had to decide whether to censor the video or let it run. Here’s my decision: WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT: Saddam Execution Video ..full including the drop » Netscape.com

Who’s copying who?

So, the Navigators on Netscape brought this to my attention today and this could be entirely coincidental, and most likely is, but considering how many times since our launch we’ve been accused of copying Digg, it is pretty amusing.
Check it out. Here’s My Member Profile Page on Netscape that we launched a redesign of on [...]

Dear Jet Numbers (and any other corporations looking to buy votes):

You’ve clearly made a mistake in your recent decision to promote Nathan Schorr to be your Business Development Manager. He would appear to be proposing unethical practices to promote your company. This is already turning into bad buzz for you, as my friend and former co-worker, Jason Calacanis, has already launched a bit of an [...]

Tracking a story…

This is one of my favorite types of Anchor Commentary: Silly String Has Serious Use in Iraq » Netscape.com. For some reason, both big media and blogs like to recycle stories, but often without tracing where the story has occurred before. We’re going to start tracking this sort of re-emergence of a story more often [...]

You have got to love crazy people….

So, nearly daily, we have people who cross the line on Netscape, posting hateful comments that are totally over the line. Normally, I send them a friendly note asking them to take it easy and they calm down. Every so often, however, I send them a friendly note and they flip out. This guy, for [...]
