David Foster Wallace is dead.

I’m shocked. Kristin and I got home tonight, and I started reading through my feeds and discovered that David Foster Wallace committed suicide by hanging himself last night.

I took a class from him when I was getting my Master’s degree at Illinois State University. I have a copy of some of my fiction that he marked up with a note he wrote me somewhere in my files. He was a very smart guy and a talented writer. How can someone go from semi-pro tennis player to Genius Award Winner and highly acclaimed writer to suicide? Very sad.

If you’ve never read any of his books, you should read Broom of the System and then if you like that, tackle Infinite Jest. I really like his stuff, though his books tend to end by just sort of stopping.

My thoughts are with his wife.

More info about the suicide can be found here.
