Gmail needs tags

I realize that Gmail has filters and labels, but what they really need is a little field under each email that says: “Tag this email (enter tags separated by commas).”

Then I could easily file and organize my email without taking all those extra steps to setup a new label. Anyone from Google reading this?

What’s wrong with labels? You have an email open, you click the drop-down, and select the label you want to apply. If there isn’t a label for what you want, you click “New label” and generate it on the fly. Quick and painless.

I don’t see anything that tags could do that labels don’t do well already.

with tags you could add multiple at the same time without any clicking to drop downs over and over.

Not a bad idea. But I like to keep my labels in GMail down to a minimum. I usually only have about 15-20 labels and they are pretty general. I have some more permanent ones “orders, serial numbers, site registrations” and I have some more transient ones, currently “wedding plans, honeymoon, school” for current projects/planning.

One solution that could maybe solve your problem (this is something I do from time to time)….Forward the email to yourself, with the “tags” in the body of the forward. The emails will stick together in GMail because they are a conversation. Then simply archive the conversation. Then you can find it through search using those tags.

  4. there’s a nice gmail greasemonkey thing that gives you keyboard shortcuts for labelling. it rocks. I just wish you could add NOTES to an email…
