Sony Home (aka Second Life comes to the PS3)

in PS3

This is something I wouldn’t normally expect from Sony:

Sony is hoping to replicate the success of social networks and Second Life with a feature called Home.

Playstation 3 gamers will be able to meet, chat and share content with friends inside a 3D universe.

I wonder if it will have games and game play built in. I mean, Sony has been behind most of the successful online gaming worlds other than World of Warcraft. I wonder how this move fits in with their competitive strategy towards Blizzard.

You can critique Sony’s online gaming all you want, but one thing that Sony beats both Blizzard and XBox Live on is that the vast majority of the games are free. If they were to take the Second Life model, make the gaming here free, and ad-supported, it would be a very good move, I think.

Update: More on this here.
