PS3 vs Wii

in PS3, wii

Now that I have both the PS3 and the Wii, I thought it would be good to compare the two.

Here’s the basics:

PS3: OVERPRICED but you can find it.
Graphics: Amazing
Store Bought Games: Some games, like Resistance Fall of Man and Blazing Angels are great games; others like Sonic suck. At $60 a pop, that’s a not so fun game of Russian Roulette.
Downloadable Games: These take FOREVER to download, but some of them, like Tekken 5 ($19.95), are amazing quality games, and other ones like Flow and BlastFactor are entertaining mini-games at a low price.
Built-in Browser: Eh. Functional, but clunky.
Multi-media functionality: With a built in Blu-ray player and the ability to load up MPEG4 movies, personal photos, and all the MP3s you want either to the internal drive or via a FAT-formatted USB drive, the PS3 is a very nice multimedia player that plugs right into your HDTV.

Wii: Priced well, but nigh impossible to find.
Graphics: I’m sure it looks great on a regular TV, but on a nice HDTV, it’s like watching the regular non-HD TV channels: serviceable and entertaining, but no wow-factor.
Store Bought Games: So far, I have Zelda, Play, Red Steel, and GT Pro Series. They are all good games, but, honestly, I’ve been playing much more of the downloadable games and Wii Sports.
Downloadable Games: This is the absolutely amazing feature of this console. You can download tons of old school games and play them for hours and hours. I mean, sure, you have to buy the Classic Controller for lots of them, but it really is a hell of a lot better than playing these games over MAME. Sure the Wii points system of fake money is somewhat irritating, but the games are cheap, navigating the online store is quick, and the games download surprisingly fast (especially compared to the PS3).
Built-in Browser: Better than the PS3’s but still nothing amazing.
Multi-media functionality: Who cares? Can’t you see I’m playing Super Mario Brothers!

I wanted to write this post just to point out that the PS3 is a great video game system that is getting a bad wrap, because Sony made it much too expensive. I love the Wii, but it doesn’t have anything new that is as fun, good looking, and cool as games like Blazing Angels and Resistance: Fall of Man. With Blazing Angels, you can fly your plane using the controllers motion-sensitive controls. It’s amazingly fun gameplay. I often find myself playing some Wii, as a preface to some serious hour or two of gameplay on the PS3.

Some of you may be thinking, but C.K., where’s your XBOX 360? I don’t do Microsoft.

Fab nailed it. Raymond Raving Rabbids is a must have.

The wii games I’ve played so far aren’t nearly as addictive as other systems I’ve touched, but I’m having 10x times the fun playing.

I’m really jonesin’ for Tiger Woods on Wii though. That’s going to be hot.

I understand your opposition to all things Microsoft, and as much as it pains me to say it, the 360 is a superb console and provides an excellent gaming experience. I have a Wii, a PS2 and a PSP as well, and neither Sony nor Nintendo have a comparable experience for online gaming. If a game costs $50-$60, it better be worth keeping beyond the main play-through, and I can say without a doubt that Xbox Live is a big factor in my replay.

Plus, at least once a week, I get to melee Matt Felumber in Call of Duty. Totally worth it.
