American Psycho Uncut

I recently watched the Uncut version of American Psycho. Although I've never seen it, I have the feeling that the cut version is much much better, partly because many friends praised the original as this dark sadistic piece. This uncut version was just too long, too intense, and too graphic. The graphic scenes detracted from the overall effect.

The “regular” version was about 1/5 the graphicness of the book. So even if they upped the ante, it still wasn’t close. [Think Misery the movie vs Misery the book then turn to 11]
This to this day has been the only book that’s made me cringe.

DC Dan – I totally agree with you. When I first heard that they would make the movie I really couldn’t get my head around how they could pull it off. The sex and violence were both very graphic and in places made me feel quite sick. Although I could not put the book down and is one of a handful that I have felt compeled to re-read.

I have a feeling that the movie could have been good if Stanley Kubrick had directed it. It felt very much like a 90s version of Clockwork Orange due to its own “ultraviolence.” However, it had none of the stylization or operatic moments needed to balance out the brutality.

c.k.: “…it had none of the stylization or operatic moments…”

Really? I thought the Huey Lewis / dancing / axe murder scene was an almost direct tribute to Kubrick.
