First Impressions of Earth

I bought The Strokes’ new album, First Impressions of Earth [iTMS link] yesterday and have been listening to it all day today during the commute. Great album. Some of the songs take a few listens to really fit your ears right, but when they do they really do. I think The Strokes are the only The ____ band from the The ____ band trend of a few years to really thrive and continue to make good rocking music. Of course, some may argue “What about The White Stripes?”, but they’re not really part of this group of bands in my eyes, and while they consistently have rocking songs, their albums are a little hodgepodge in my opinion.

If you’ve ever played guitar and you like rock ‘n roll, you will love the guitars throughout this album. Good rocking The Strokes music, but the guitars are more frenetic than usual and really have been sticking out as I listen. Love it. Check it out.

I hate to play semantics (well, no I don’t…), but I don’t think you can really compare The Strokes and the White Stripes as “bands.” Both may be guitar driven, but I think that’s where the basis for comparison ends. The Strokes are an actual group of people playing together; the Stripes are essentially the experiments and improvisations of Jack White, while he’s occasionally tethered to a drum kit. This is most apparent if you see the Stripes live, where the setlist is totally improvised and Meg is literally along for the ride.

I agree. That is what I should have said when I was saying that I wasn’t counting Stripes amongst the The _____ bands.
