Apple Fix Tiger: Waiting for 10.4.2
My Apple Matters rantarticle, Apple Fix Tiger: Waiting for 10.4.2, is up and ready for reading:
Apple seems to be “pulling a Windows.” Rather than addressing the problems in Tiger, they are ignoring them publicly and talking about all the new features to distract us from the truth. They recently announced a new version of iTunes with support for podcasts. That’s great, but where is it and in the meantime why can I no longer transfer pictures and files via iChat since I upgraded to Tiger? Why does Spotlight decide to bring the Finder to a screeching halt every once-in-a-while? Why does iPhoto crash every third time I launch it?
Check it out.

Hey, I’ve had the same problem with sending files via iChat, I think I read that someone noticed it was only when it 10.3 iChat was talking to 10.4 iChat. Is this your experience? Do you have the same problem from 10.4 to 10.4 boxes? Lastly it seems that 10.4 like to resest a lot of things, have you double checked to see if the problem could be firewall related? Also I agree that 10.4 and 10.4.1 have been pretty substandard as compared to my past Mac OS X experiences.

Hey, Dan,
Yeah. In 10.4.0 the problem was specific to 10.3 to 10.4 discussions, but since I’ve upgraded to 10.4.1 it seems to happen less often but in more varied situations.

Well, 10.4.2 came out today. I ran the update but I have yet to see if it fixed my problem. What I consider to be the biggest problem, 10.4 and 10.4.1 turns all Power Mac G5 1.8Ghz single processer machines that came out in late 2004 (Rev B) in to a 60lb Paperweight. People from all around the world were speculating wether 10.4.2 would fix this problem. It was assumed that apple would agnor the bug with their updates. Cross your fingers. The bug usually shows its ugly face after two hours of run time. It usually materializes in the form of the spinning beach ball of death, or a total lockup. Maybe apple though silent didn’t forget about the little people.
