I’ve been meaning to write up a run through of the different PSP games I have / have played and rate them for people wondering what game they should buy next, so here it is:
Wipeout Pure—If you have ever been a fan of the Wipeout series, you will love this game. If you like racing games, you will love this game. It looks great, no lag whatsoever, has a cool soundtrack, and you can grab weapons and upgrades for your vehicle as you race along for attacking your opponents / protecting from their attacks. Also, until Sony releases their own web-browser for the PSP, this game’s integrated browser is the key to most of the extant internet-related hacks for the PSP. Rating: ****
Metal Gear Ac!d—This one is going to be a hit / miss for a lot of people. I think, for me, it runs a close second to Untold Legends; however, I love turn-based strategy games. If you’re a big fan of the Metal Gear series, this card-based incarnation of the series might be off-putting. The game takes some getting used to, especially the odd fact that the developers switched the functionality of the X and O keys in this game. X is cancel and O is confirm, which is exactly opposite from the default on the PSP’s integrated interface. Also, several boards need specific steps to be taken before you can have any possibility of winning the board, and the game won’t tell you that you’re on the wrong track unless you do very specific things. I was stuck on a board that required some explosives that I didn’t have in my arsenal, and I wandered around forever until ultimately I stood in front of a cracked wall and received a communication that I needed to go to another board to get the explosives. That’s annoying. However, overall it is a really fun game. Rating: ****
Dynasty Warriors—I love this game on the PS2, so this was one of the first games that I bought for the PSP and the first to really make me think “Wow! The PSP really is like a portable Playstation 2!” I know a lot of people that don’t like Dynasty Warriors b/c they think it is too easy. Here’s a hint: change the difficulty setting to “Chaos.” Not so easy anymore and tons of fun. The PSP iteration either has a slow-motion feature in heavily chaotic battle scenes OR it suffers from lag-time. I guess we’ll discover which when they un-underclock the PSP. Rating: *** & 1/2.
Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade—This is the game I’ve logged the most time on. I love it. If you like Diablo / Diablo II, this RPG is very similar to that series and a great little quest-based game. Rating: *****
Tony Hawk’s Underground 2—This game is cool if you like the Tony Hawk line, but I have to admit, I’m a little disappointed by it. The graphics in the cut scenes look a bit more cartoonish than the regular Tony Hawk games. Also, I absolutely hate that the joystick controls the camera and the directional pad controls movement. I want to switch these around. Rating: ***
Twisted Metal Head-On—This is the worst game for the PSP that I’ve played. It’s graphics look way too cartoonish and if I play for more that a few minutes I start to get nauseated. I’m looking to trade this in towards Lumines soon. Rating: **
I’ll have more mini-reviews down the road when I get more games and have a chance to play around with them. Stay tuned.
