The big thing that the iPod Shuffle is missing is the ability to Autofill from a mounted regular iPod. Since I only have about 2 GB of music on my computer, and around 32GBs of music on my iPod, the selection is limited. Being able to Autofill from my iPod would be a great way of adding value to the iPod Shuffle, marketing it as a smaller sidekick for your regular iPod. I don’t see the downside to this option for Apple, as you’d still have all the regular DRM in effect and the inability to pull the songs back to a computer for unlawful tinkering and spreading of music. You could even “pair” a particular iPod Shuffle to a particular iPod.

Please enable Autofill from iPod as an option in iTunes for the iPod Shuffle.

You can! Make sure your big iPod has disk mode enabled, make a new playlist in iTunes, and go to File: Import Directory…and load G: (or whatever drive letter your big ipod is assigned to). It’ll grab all the mp3s in the hidden directories to the playlists…then you can just autofill from your new playlist.
David, this doesn’t work on a Mac. I’m curious to know on your set up, does it let you access the songs from off the iPod, or does it actually copy all the songs from your iPod back to your computer (which is the default method for iTunes adding songs to the Library)?
I understand how to find the F00 files on my iPod when it is attached to my PC. I also know how to copy. What I want to do is copy the songs inside the 50 (& growing) folders and not have to open each, select all,…etc.
Can you explain how to, please?

There are several programs that will automate that process for you. Try a search for iPod at Versiontracker.com and you should find a solution. I’m working on a script to do this on a Mac, but don’t know how to do it on a PC.

on the pc its simple. load up both pcs with the itunes software and get all of your tracks on 1 pc loaded on to the ipod. insert the shuffle into the usb port of the second pc. then start i tunes. start windows explorer at this point and go to your new drive letter. then navigate to (new drive letter):\iPod_Control\Music and copy all of the folders theirin…. to wherever you want… simple.
