Weblogg-ed - The Read/Write Web in the Classroom on the WSJ: How do you communicate with students who have grown up with technology?

Tomorrow marks the beginning of my class blog version 2.0 (located here), as the Spring semester begins early in the morning at Iona.

I made some changes to the way the blog will be used in the class this semester. Last semester was definitely a learning experience for me, as I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this experiment. I found that everyone sort of arbitrarily posted everywhere. Certain students posted replies to other student’s post on the main page, whereas other students posted totally unrelated posts in reply to an other student’s post. This semester, I disabled comments, so all discussion has to go through the main page of the site. In order to make this work, I am actually going to attempt to schedule several computer classroom visits early in the semester to get them all acclimated to the basic html necessary for what they may need to do for posting.

I think overall, I went in expecting all the students to be very familiar with technology, but I was surprised that most of them weren’t. A few had virtually no computer background whatsoever, whereas a large percentage only knew email and chat, and, unfortunately, chat lingo doesn’t play well in formal academic papers (what they are supposed to be learning to write in my class).

I’m excited about tomorrow. Hopefully, it will continue to be a process of learning for both the students and myself.
