NSLU2 as an iTunes Server

Coolness. I just finished copying all my backed-up MP3s over to the shared drive connected to my Linksys Network Storage Link for USB 2.0. Close to 12 days worth of music that any wireless computer in my apartment can access. I can even stream the music over to my stereo via the Airport Express. Here’s the how-to, but save yourself some time and simply download the pre-built package at the end of the article. Much easier.

well, you can flash the firmware through the web-interface (I don’t have it in front of me to tell you), but I wouldn’t do it. Supposedly the new version of the firmware locks out telnetting into the device. Check the NSLU2 Yahoo! Group for more detailed info on this.

Yeah, I’m lost, too. I think I need the equivalent of “iTunes on the NSLU2 for Dummies.’ I read the pre-packaged ReadMe which left me standing back at the station. I definitely missed this train.

C.K.,

I’m very interested in buying one of these Linksys RSLU2 for the iTunes server reason but your instructions seem fairly confusing to me. The tip you provide “If you want to skip all this stuff and just want a binary that you can load onto your NSLU2, you can download the 185KB file from here” doesn’t make sense to me. Is this firmware you put on the NSLU2? I’m very confused. Is there anyway you could go into more detail? I think I understand how to set up a hard drive on the network link but the iTunes server has me lost. Any info would be great! Thanks.

guys

itunes server works great in nslu2.

but u must do some steps first. Initially u must “unslung” the device to a ext3 formatted external drive. find the unslung firmware and read a bit.

MAKE SURE U FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY

Then u just have to ipkg this service (by the time you do that you should have become experts on nslu2 ;-)

In my nslu2 i have made links in the homepage and I am able to control the itunes shared library over the web!

its great!
